Programs

We partner with numerous tribal organizations, state and federal agencies and fellow nonprofits to achieve our goals across project areas. Current priorities include the restoration of fish and wildlife habitat, advancing food security through community agriculture and regional food distribution, providing effective and inclusive outreach to District landowners, and investing in youth through education and employment.

Salmon Habitat Restoration

Salmon is an important cultural and economic resource for District residents but has been impacted by the loss of stream habitat due to invasive species and industry road construction. Since 2012, TTCD has been working towards complete watershed connectivity across the District by removing fish passage barriers along the 260 miles of remote roads. Undersized and/or poorly installed culverts can cut off access to upstream habitats for aquatic organisms including all five species of pacific salmon. As of 2024, TTCD has replaced 13 culverts restoring access to 60.2 stream miles and over 500 acres of lake acres.

Invasive Species

Elodea is Alaska’s first invasive submersed freshwater aquatic plant and has been found in several areas of the state, including Cordova, Fairbanks, Anchorage, the Kenai Peninsula, and the Matanuska-Susitna (Mat-Su) Valley. Establishment of this invasive species can have broad ecological and economic consequences, especially where Alaska’s salmon resources are concerned. Elodea can reproduce from a single plant fragment, allowing it to disperse quickly when it becomes entangled in floatplane rudders, boat propellers, and trailers. Elodea was discovered in the TTCD area in 2014 in Alexander Lake and then in nearby Sucker Lake in 2016. In 2019, Elodea was found in Big Lake, the state’s busiest inland boat launch.

Community agriculture

Since 2012, TTCD has worked closely with the Native Village of Tyonek (NVT) and Tyonek Native Corporation (TNC) to establish a food security and community agriculture program that serves Tyonek residents. Over the past decade, these efforts have grown into a suite of programs under the Tyonek Grown name including a 1.5 acre community farm and garden, indoor hydroponic systems, educational workshops for youth and adults, and various food security initiatives. In this time, Tyonek Grown has become a flagship program for remote tribes growing food off the road system in the state of Alaska, growing ~3000 lbs of diversified produce annually and integrating nutrition education, cooking, and food preservation into the lifestyles of the Tyonek community.

Food Security

Tyonek, Alaska, is a remote (off-the-road-system) community, located 43 air miles from the nearest urban center, where transportation of food items can face steep prices and regular disruptions. Approximately 170 tribal members live within the Alaskan Native Village of Tyonek, while another 600-900 live in other locations but remain tied to the land, both culturally and economically, with many returning for subsistence in the summer months.

Youth and Education (TYCS)

TTCD aims to foster community self-determination in natural resources management and conservation through hands-on education, training and career opportunities for Alaska Native youth.​We work closely with the Tebughna School to offer culturally relevant STEM lessons for ages K-12 throughout the school year.

Outreach And Technical Assistance

TTCD provides expertise and technical assistance to District landowners planning conservation projects on their property. TTCD staff will assist landowners as they apply for and manage funding from the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) or help identify applicable funding from another source.
